Keeping kids’ tablets working: cases, screens and batteries

Children are hard on tablets. A few simple habits and the right accessories can prevent most of the damage we see, and save money on repairs.

Tablets used by children face drops, spills, tugged cables and sticky fingers. Most of the damage we repair is preventable with a bit of preparation.

Protect it properly

  • A thick, shock-absorbing case with a raised edge around the screen
  • A tempered glass screen protector
  • A case with a handle or stand, so it is set down rather than dropped
  • A short, sturdy charging cable that is less likely to be tripped over

Charging habits

  • Charge on a table, not on a bed or sofa where heat builds up
  • Unplug by holding the connector, not pulling the cable
  • Avoid cheap, unbranded chargers
  • Keep drinks away from the charging area

Check any guarantees first

Some tablets sold as kids’ editions come with a replacement or accidental damage guarantee. Check what yours includes before paying for a repair.

Common repairs we see

Cracked screens, loose charging ports and worn batteries are the most common. If the tablet is still in use and otherwise working, a repair is usually cheaper than replacing it, and it keeps the child's apps and settings in place.
