Drawers across the UK are full of old phones. They are worth something, whether sold, traded in or recycled, but only once your personal data is safely off them.
The checklist
- Back up photos, messages and files
- Unpair smartwatches and earbuds
- Sign out of iCloud and turn off Find My on an iPhone
- Remove your Google account and any Samsung account on Android
- Remove the SIM card and any memory card
- Factory reset the phone
- Remove the phone from your account's trusted devices list
Why signing out matters
iPhones have Activation Lock and Android phones have factory reset protection. If you reset without signing out, the next owner may be unable to use the phone, and trade-in companies may reject it.
Repair first?
A cracked screen or tired battery can reduce resale value by more than the repair costs. Get a repair price and compare it with the difference in trade-in value before deciding.
Recycle responsibly
