Is a cracked iPhone back glass worth fixing?

A cracked back might look cosmetic, but broken glass can cut fingers, let in moisture and weaken the phone. Here is how to decide whether to repair it now.

Since the iPhone 8, most iPhones have a glass back, which makes wireless charging possible but also means the back can crack just like the screen. Many people leave it, hidden under a case. That is not always the best choice.

Why it matters

  • Sharp edges and loose shards can cut fingers and scratch pockets
  • Cracks let dust and moisture in, so water resistance can no longer be relied on
  • Loose glass can spread into the camera lens area
  • A badly damaged back can affect wireless charging

Is it just the glass?

A hard drop that cracks the back can also bend the frame or damage parts underneath. Check that wireless charging, the cameras and the flash still work. If anything else has changed since the drop, mention it when you enquire so it can be checked before quoting.

What a repair involves

Rear glass replacement means removing the old glass and fitting a new back with care around the cameras and wireless charging coil. Confirm the price for your model before any work starts, and ask the business what warranty it gives on the repair.

If you plan to sell the phone

A cracked back usually lowers trade-in value noticeably. Comparing the repair price with the difference in trade-in value often makes the decision easy.
