Screen replacements are among the most common repairs we do, so we get asked about protectors a lot. The honest answer: a good protector is worth it for most people, as long as you understand its limits.
What protectors do well
- Stop everyday scratches from keys, coins and sand
- Take the hit from minor knocks, cracking instead of the screen
- Are cheap and easy to replace when damaged
What they cannot do
A protector will not stop a phone from breaking in a hard drop onto a corner or edge. It also does nothing for the back glass or the display underneath the glass, which can still be damaged by pressure. Pair a protector with a case that has raised edges for the best protection.
Tempered glass or film?
Tempered glass feels like the original screen and absorbs impacts better. Thin film protectors resist scratches but offer little impact protection. For most phones, a well-fitted tempered glass protector is the better choice.
Check compatibility
Some phones use in-display fingerprint sensors that only work reliably with compatible protectors. Look for protectors made for your exact model and fingerprint sensor type, and keep the sensor area clean.
